Burning Books by John von Daler

In Oklahoma we children used to play outside in the 100 degree (F) heat.
The bottoms of our feet grew callused from constant running on the sunstruck streets at midday. When guests our age visited from out of town, we used to tease them by throwing off our shoes and enticing them barefoot onto the frying pavement.
Lately I have begun to see the pages I write as potentially dangerous footing for all-too-innocent guests. I remember that good old Laurence Sterne used to offer his readers a blank page occasionally, perhaps just to cool everybody off. Not a bad idea, when the heat is on.
